Public Awareness

Public Awareness is one of the key objectives of the Wilderness Foundation.

The future of wilderness globally - like that of sustainable development - depends in part on the efforts of all non-government organizations, and the building of broad coalitions of partners among them. Only then, together with public support can we integrate the need for development with conservation of the environment, and bring into full play the value of wilderness as a benchmark for original natural systems and human impact.

Features

  • Private Reserves and Wildland Conservation
The role of the private landowner in conservation in Africa cannot be understated. Only 6.5% of South Africa falls under the nationally protected system (and the wilderness component of this comprises only 2.8% of the designated areas) but private landowners account for at least another 8% of the landmass of the country under some form of conservation management.
